How to Wire a DC Ceiling Fan to a Wall Switch
Every Smafan DC ceiling fan with wall control comes with a hardwired wall control that mounts in a standard wall box. It uses just two wires, so installation is simple, but mixing up those two wires is the most common reason a wall control seems dead. This guide shows you exactly how to connect it, how to test it, and how to fix it if the buttons don't respond.
Note: This guide applies only to the wall control included with Smafan DC ceiling fans. If you're installing a Smafan smart wall switch on an AC ceiling fan, follow the smart fan and light switch installation guide instead.
Before You Start
- Turn off power at the circuit breaker, not just at the wall. Confirm the wires are dead with a non-contact voltage tester before touching them.
- Keep the fan's installation manual nearby for model-specific details.
- Check your fan type. These steps are for DC motor fans that shipped with a Smafan wall control.
- If you're not comfortable working with household wiring, hire a licensed electrician.
DC Ceiling Fan Wall Control Wiring Diagram
The wall control has two wires: a brown wire that brings power in, and a black wire that sends controlled power out to the fan. The household neutral does not connect to the wall control at all. It runs straight to the fan.

How to Wire the Wall Control Step by Step
- Turn off power at the circuit breaker and confirm the wires are dead.
- Connect the brown wire from the wall control to the household hot wire (black or red) with a wire connector.
- Connect the black wire from the wall control to the fan's black wire.
- Check every connector by tugging each wire gently. None should pull loose.
- Fold the wires into the wall box, mount the wall control, and attach the wall plate.
- Restore power at the breaker.
Step 1 After Wiring: Slide the Main Power Switch to ON
The wall control has a Main Power Switch, the ON/OFF slider at the bottom of the panel. Slide it to ON. The buttons won't respond while this slider is off, which is easy to miss after installation.
Step 2 After Wiring: Test the Fan and Light Controls
Smafan DC wall controls come in two versions. Check which one you have, then use the matching table below.
- Wall control with light buttons: has fan buttons plus light buttons for brightness and color temperature.
- Fan-only wall control: has fan buttons and a TIMER button, with no light buttons.
Wall Control with Light Buttons
After sliding the Main Power Switch to ON, check whether the fan light turns on. Then press the fan buttons (speed and reverse) and the light buttons (brightness and color temperature), and compare the results with the table below.

Fan-Only Wall Control (No Light)

How to Fix Reversed Brown and Black Wires
On a wall control with light buttons, reversed wiring means only the slider works, turning the light on and off. On a fan-only wall control, nothing responds at all. In both cases, the brown and black wires are swapped: brown is going to the fan and black is going to household power. The wall control isn't damaged. It just isn't receiving power on the right wire.
This mix-up usually happens in one of two places.
At the wall control leads: the brown and black wires were connected in each other's positions.
In the wall box splices: the wall control's brown wire was joined to the fan wire, and its black wire was joined to the household hot wire.
To fix it:
- Turn off power at the circuit breaker.
- Reconnect the wires so the brown wire goes to the household hot wire and the black wire goes to the fan's black wire, as shown in the wiring diagram above.
- Restore power, slide the Main Power Switch to ON, and test every button again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does only the light turn on when I use the slider on my wall control?
This applies to wall controls with light buttons. The brown and black wires are reversed. When they're swapped, the bottom ON/OFF slider can only turn the light on and off, and every other button stops working. Turn off the power, connect the brown wire to household hot and the black wire to the fan, and all functions will return.
Why doesn't my fan-only wall control respond at all?
On a fan-only wall control (no light buttons), reversed brown and black wires make the whole panel unresponsive, including the fan and timer buttons. First make sure the Main Power Switch is ON. Then turn off the power and check that the brown wire goes to household hot and the black wire goes to the fan. If the wiring is correct, check the breaker and wire connectors.
Does the ceiling fan wall control need a neutral wire?
No. The Smafan DC wall control connects with only two wires: brown to household hot and black to the fan. The household neutral (white) connects directly to the fan's white wire and does not pass through the wall control.
Can I use a regular wall switch or dimmer with a DC ceiling fan?
No. DC ceiling fans need a dedicated wall control and won't work correctly with standard fan speed switches or dimmers. Smafan DC ceiling fans include their own hardwired wall control. Our smart wall switches are designed for AC ceiling fans only.
Do I need an electrician to wire a ceiling fan wall control?
